Florida Democratic Party Statement on the 2nd Anniversary of the Historic #J11 Protests in Cuba
July 11, 2023
From Chair of the Florida Democratic Party, Nikki Fried:
Nikki Fried
Democratic Party Chair
“ Two years ago, the Cuban people took to the streets in peaceful protests, raising their voices in an outcry for freedom. Two years later, the Cuban regime keeps more than 600 peaceful protesters in prison, including women and minors, deprived of their most sacred right: freedom.
Since July 11, 2021, the regime has intensified its repression to silence and intimidate.
They are keeping one of the most prominent leaders of the Cuban opposition, Jose Daniel Ferrer of the Union Patriotica de Cuba, imprisoned and isolated. The leader of the San Isidro movement and Cuban artist, Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, was sentenced to five years and continues to be incarcerated in a maximum-security prison.
The Cuban opposition leader Félix Navarro Rodríguez, the coordinator of the Party for Democracy Pedro Luis Boitel, was sentenced to 9 years in prison, and his daughter, Lady in White Saylí Navarro, was sentenced to eight years in prison. Maikel "El Osorbo," one of the composers and interpreters of the song Patria Y Vida, which became a hymn of freedom for Cubans, is in prison and sentenced to nine years.
As Florida Democrats, we raise our voices to denounce the Castro dictatorship and its heinous crimes. We continue to stand with the oppressed people of Cuba in their struggle for their freedom. The Cuban people deserve to live with dignity. We echo their cry for freedom and the phrase they carry in their hearts Patria Y Vida, not death. ”
